This “drive-by” Delaware plate is another Havona find (picture a woman hanging out the window of a cab shouting “Follow that Car!”. Delaware is the second smallest state by area and has the distinction of having the most scientists and engineers as a percentage of its workforce and the highest number of patents granted per 1000 individuals (somewhere there is a statistician with a spreadsheet feeding Wikipedia with this stuff).
Delaware takes its name from the Eastern Algonquin tribes collectively referred to as the Unami Lenape or “Delaware”. It is bordered by Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. One of the 13 original colonies, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution, thus earning the moniker, “The First State”.
Today Delaware is something of a corporate haven owing to its business-friendly incorporation law. A full 50% of publicly traded American companies and 60% of Fortune 500 companies are incorporated in Delaware. Liquor is only sold in specially licensed establishments between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. It is the only state that has not changed its license plate design since 1959. These facts may or may not be related.
Notable Delawareians include: Joe Biden, Christine O’Donnell, Mehmet Oz, Elizabeth Shue, George Thorogood and hundreds of other people who are appear to only be famous within Delaware itself.
