A PSP member asked…

We were thinking that it would be nice to have a quick family getaway for a few days. Any recommendations for a short-distance trip to get away from the city for a few nights? Airbnb is coming up short on availability—any other ideas for a few nights mid-week?”

Starlite Hotel, Kerhonkson, NY: “This place is amazing.”

Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, NY: “I think your best bet is an inn like that.”

Emerson Resort & Spa: “Emerson Resort and Spa in the Catskills is great! It’s in Phoenicia and only 2 hours away. We are going there late August and I cannot wait.”

“Have you tried western MA? Tanglewood, Mass Moca, Norman Rockwell museum, kayaking, paddleboarding.  If you stay in eastern NY, you can go the other way to Hudson. Also less expensive, might have more availability. Look in the Chatham, NY area or Columbia County more broadly for lodging?”

Long Island

North Fork: “Cape May or North Fork come to mind.  There are hotels which may have mid week availability. Love both and 2-3 days is perfect amount of time.”

Pennsylvania

The Poconos: “Last year we made a last minute booking to the Poconos. It was totally weird and we totally liked it. Not sure if we are going back but for an easy getaway that is about family it was totally great. We found a reasonable Airbnb at some sort of arrowhead gated community and they had community pools and random restaurants and pretty rivers. We went to an Italian restaurant that served Tostitos chips with pace picante sauce, Caesar Salad from a bag and Mac and cheese from a box. All completely bizarre but also great if you know this isn’t going to be the Hamptons or Woodstock.

Might be an option for you. I may not be selling it well but we really enjoyed it in make lemons out of lemonade kind of way.”

Bucks County, PA: “I bet you’ll get lots of recs for heading north, but wanted to suggest one of my family’s faves—Bucks County, PA. Under two hour drive, beautiful hiking (check out Ringing Rocks Park) and places for swimming/boating, great antiquing, you could take in a show at Bucks County Playhouse!

Lambertville and Frenchtown, NJ are nearby and there’s great shopping and art there. One of my fave ice cream places, Owowcow.

Might have luck with an Airbnb in one of those NJ towns or in one of the Bucks County towns. There are a few inns and B&Bs around there. Lots in and near New Hope I think.”

Bear Creek Mountain Resort: “It’s less then 2 hours from Brooklyn, very comfortable, has nice grounds and activities and there are lots of fun things to do in the area, and good places to eat and drink.  If you go, get one of the mountain facing suites, they are very spacious, with full kitchens and big decks overlooking the ‘mountain.’”

New Jersey

Cape May: “Cape May or North Fork come to mind.  There are hotels which may have mid week availability. Love both and 2-3 days is perfect amount of time.”

Rhode Island

Little Compton / South Kingstown, RI: “For a 2-3 night trip we love Little Compton / South Kingstown area in Rhode Island, as it’s much chiller and less crowded than Hamptons but great beaches.”

Montreal, Canada

“You can also try Montreal for a few nights if you want that city feel- super short flight.”
