KinderHaus Brooklyn

Description

Inquiry-based German language PreSchool and Pre-K programs for children ages 1-5 years. We offer DaySchool and AfterSchool options from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, as well as a SummerCamp and MiniCamps including a WaldCamp based in the beautiful Prospect Park.
KinderHaus Brooklyn is dedicated to providing a warm and stimulating environment where children are fully immersed in the German language and culture. Our highly qualified teachers are German native speakers all with relevant pedagogical backgrounds who provide rich and versatile curricula with a focus on self-guided learning and outdoor activities.

Children's active participation is a key aspect of our emergent curriculum and the belief that children must play a significant role in inventing and shaping classroom themes and projects. These aspects combined with the benefits of a full immersion education continues to help KinderHaus programs significantly exceed New York State standards.

Review: My daughter is heading into her third year at Kinderhaus, and we continue to be thankful for the excellent care and education she receives there. This summer she got to participate in Waldkinder, where she spent her mornings in Prospect Park, exploring nature and gaining independence. There is such a wonderful community at this school, and her development has just skyrocketed, year after year. Neither myself nor my husband are native German speakers, but I wanted my child to have early exposure to another language and she is just thriving at Kinderhaus. The teachers are wonderful and loving and communicative, and we are already looking forward to next year at Kinderhaus!; Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours; What would you change? Honestly nothing--I wish there were more non-German speaking families in the community!

Waldkinder Location: Prospect Park and 7th Avenue REVIEW: Loved that it was all outdoors with each week on a different topic, combining educational tid-bits with fun and activities. The camp is German immersion. CHANGES: I would love for the camp to have a separate program for older kids, because it's one of the few German immersion options. DETAILS: Age of child; 5 … Weeks attended: 3

We are so grateful to have found Kinderhaus - it’s the best thing we’ve ever done for our son. He is in his second year of the Ladybugs class, and his teachers Brigitte and Lorina are absolutely wonderful! The class has a new theme each week (e.g. Feelings, Fire Safety, Flower Power) that guides choices of arts & crafts, songs, and reading. With these new themes, our son’s German vocabulary is always expanding. The kids also go outside everyday (and their classroom has a backyard—which is amazing). We love that Kinderhaus combines NYC Pre-K curriculum with traditional German Kindergarten, all the while teaching our son important things like putting on his shoes and cleaning up together. It’s amazing to see him come home with new life skills! Importantly, we know that our son is loved and safe at Kinderhaus. Teachers/admin communication has been great. Each drop-off/pick-up allows for one-on-one time with the teacher to check in and get an update on our son’s day. Brigitte and Lorina’s dedication to learning and caring for each individual child has fostered a sense of belonging and comfort that makes school a place for our son to learn, grow, and have fun each day. We love Kinderhaus!

Review: I feel like this program is the best kept secret in Park Slope. Its program philosophy is aligned with Montessori, they emphasize arts and discovery and independence, and the teachers are all incredible human beings. There’s outdoor space with the most amazing giant tree to provide shade, and a great parent community. If folks are hesitant because they aren’t German speaking, I say you’re missing out on one of the best preschools in New York. Cannot recommend it more highly. Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours

Review: Small group of children of mixed ages, so my kid made friends and learned from older kids and made friends and helped the younger ones. Hands on curriculum with lots of outdoor exploration and learning. Focus on social development, inquiry and discovery vs "traditional teaching" in the pre-K age group. Amenities: Has outdoor space, Has after-school options, Has early morning hours, bi-lingual English/German What would you change about the program, if anything, and why? More pictures for the parents during the day/week

Kinderhaus is a wonderful full immersion German program that over the last 18 months has created a great community and sense of belonging of our children to classmates, teachers and parents. Neither my husband nor I are native German speakers and we are very pleased with the continued progress of our 3- and 5-year old. We get great detail from our conferences with the teachers and very detailed report cards. Our oldest child is now moving on to grade “K” at the closely connected German School of Brooklyn. While it’s great she’ll be joined by a quite a few classmates – other children will start in the strong local Public School system. Our youngest will continue at Kinderhaus for more small size group classes, playful exercises, Soccer class, Dance and music-led modules - thru experiential learning. The bond with teachers has been strong and our children are developing a very open mind as New Yorkers along both the German calendar and traditions but moreover a multi-cultural environment. During the outbreak of COVID-19, the Kinderhaus team was fast to respond with digitally supported materials and age-appropriate ZOOM calls – and as we are approaching the re-opening scenarios we really like the outdoor space that is available in all locations.

We are commuting to Park Slope on the G for our child to attend this school and so far it has been worth it. Small classroom, attentive teachers who prioritize independence, and most importantly we've seen amazing language development from our child. Highly recommend. … About the facility: Has outdoor space, Has afterschool options, Has early morning hours … What would you change? Would love it to be more geographically convenient!
